envy is a compass, not a sin — it just showed you where you want to go
Everyone feels all of this. Prime is how fast you come back.
mechanism
Envy is a comparison signal. Seeing someone with what you want makes the brain flag a gap between your life and a life you consider possible for yourself. Nothing has been taken from you and no rule was broken, which is why envy stings without giving you anyone to blame. The sting is information: it points at a want you have not admitted out loud.
not to confuse with
angry: something of yours was crossed; here nothing was · frustrated: you know the goal and it is blocked; here the goal is not yet named · insecure: the fear is about your worth, not about the thing · grateful: the same comparison, read from the other end
in the body
a pull in the chest, the eyes going back to the same image, a quick urge to diminish the person or to close the app
feel it
Let it be there for two minutes without arguing with it and without scrolling on. Envy that is admitted turns into a direction; envy that is denied turns into contempt for the person who has it — and that costs you the information.
what to do
Convert it: name exactly what you want, in your own words, and the smallest first step you could take this week. If the want is not really yours on inspection, drop it and the sting goes with it.
don't
do not compare your inside to their outside — you see the result, not the years · do not diminish them: it feels better for a minute and costs you the compass · do not turn it into a plan of ten steps tonight
if you do nothing
The sting stays and turns into either quiet contempt or a low background of «my life is wrong». Both are expensive: the first isolates you from people who could show you the road, the second erases the wins you already have.
after
the same person showing up three times is a strong compass reading: it is your direction, not your enemy · a want you named and dropped is progress, not failure
