mechanism
Shame is a verdict on the self, not on an act. Guilt says «I did a bad thing»; shame says «I am a bad thing». It evolved to keep you inside the group — the impulse is to hide, shrink, disappear — which is why it isolates exactly when contact would end it. Shame cannot be repaired by action, because in its own logic there is nothing to repair: you are the defect.
not to confuse with
guilty: one act, against someone or a rule — and repairable · embarrassed: a public stumble, sharp and shallow, funny later · insecure: the verdict is still ahead, not delivered · regret: about a choice you made, not about who you are
in the body
heat in the face and neck, eyes down, the physical urge to become smaller or leave, the body curling inward
feel it
Notice that the sentence is «I am», not «I did» — that single word is the whole difference. Do not argue with the verdict; check who issued it. Most shame is borrowed: a voice from years ago, still passing sentence in the present.
what to do
Split the act from the self. Name what actually happened, in facts. If there is a real act, it belongs to guilt and can be repaired. What remains after the act is named is usually someone else's standard you never agreed to.
don't
no hiding — isolation is what shame runs on · do not confess to everyone to relieve pressure: that is the same avoidance from the other side · do not accept the verdict just because it feels certain
if you do nothing
Shame stays and gets managed by avoidance: fewer people, fewer attempts, fewer places where it could be triggered. The world shrinks around the verdict, and the shrinking looks like proof that the verdict was right.
after
if the same verdict returns, write it down word for word — it usually turns out to be a quote from someone specific · the act, once repaired, does not need shame to guard it
