«not enough» is a forecast, not a verdict — the plan is how you test it tonight
Everyone feels all of this. Prime is how fast you come back.
mechanism
Insecurity is anxiety pointed at judgement. The forecast is not about an event but about how you will be seen: not enough, not ready, exposed. The body braces the same way, and attention turns inward to audit yourself — which is exactly what makes performance worse and the forecast look true.
not to confuse with
anxious: the threat is an event, not a verdict about you · ashamed: the verdict already landed, it is not ahead · embarrassed: a public stumble, sharp and shallow · envious: they have it, and the sting is about the thing, not your worth
in the body
throat tight, shoulders forward, the urge to make yourself smaller, rehearsing sentences before saying them
feel it
Notice that you are auditing yourself, not the situation. The audit is the symptom. Bring the body down first, then look at the actual task — it is almost always smaller than the verdict.
what to do
Prepare instead of shrinking. Name the one thing you will say or do, get it concrete, and let the judgement be someone else's business. Competence is built by preparation; nothing is built by rehearsing how bad it will look.
don't
do not rehearse the disaster version — it is practice for failing · do not pre-apologise: it invites the verdict you fear · do not shrink the task to feel safer
if you do nothing
You go in smaller than you are, or do not go in at all. Both outcomes confirm the forecast, and the next one starts from a lower place. This is how competent people build a history of avoiding rooms they belong in.
after
compare the forecast with what actually happened — the gap is the data · if the same room scares you three times, prepare for that room specifically, not for life
